Democrats' timetable for withdrawl
By Tom Smith

It's time for Democrats to start thinking about an orderly withdrawl, an exit strategy. Not from Iraq, but from their present ill-considered redoubt regarding Iraq policy. The best withdrawls are orderly; fighting retreats. So Democrats can grudgingly acknowledge successful elections in Iraq, gradually stop sounding so defeatist, shift over to tentatively talking about, if not victory, at least not defeat, and then finally claim credit for staying the course. After all, if you can happily contemplate abandoning troops in the field, it is not so hard to contemplate ditching your loony supporters at home. Not yet, of course. After the primaries will do.

Profiles in political courage here.
