last post, I mentioned that slaves from West Africa (particularly the Senegal-Gambia area) supplied not just the labor but the original know-how for the rice cultivation in the South Carolina Low Country in the 18th and 19th centuries. "Dearieme" wrote asking if these slaves had farmed as free peasants while in West Africa or as slaves there too. I don't know the answer to that question, but it's an interesting one. If anyone out there knows, I'd like to hear from them.
