Here is a good description of how papal elections work. (Thanks to

This is the leading description of vatican institutions. (Bear in mind it's by a Jesuit, as in "Mrs. O'Mally went to a Franciscan and asked, 'Father, may I say a novena for a Lexus?' The Franciscan replied 'What's a Lexus?' So Mrs. O'Malley went to a Jesuit and asked, 'Father, may I say a novena for a Lexus?' The Jesuit replied, 'What's a novena?'" Catholic humor.)
